What’s September 27?

A recent notice from the U.S. Mint found on their website

Due to the increasing market value of gold, the American Eagle Gold Uncirculated Coins are temporarily unavailable while pricing for this option can be adjusted; therefore, no orders can be taken at this time. We expect products to be available with adjusted pricing on or after September 27, 2007.

A few questions I had (aside from the obvious media attention)…

  • Why is the U.S. Government halting sales for, from what I understand, the first time in U.S. history?
  • If Price Adjustment is indeed necessary why is it being done now (after an apparent 17 month consolidation stage and before an expected rally) and why hasn’t is ever been done before?
  • What significance does September 27th play?
  • Does this have any major implications for the dollar, i.e. a revaluation of the Dollar and/or the Gold price?
  • Is it of any significance that this comes just days before what is probably the most important Federal Reserve meeting in ages?

Time will tell.
